ACBL Hall of Fame

Class of 1954

As always, thanks for voting. 13 managers voted, meaning a player needed 10 votes to be elected. We have two new inductees to the ACBL Hall of Fame, one a newcomer to the ballot and one (drumroll please) a player who has been on the ballot a number of years but this year garnered the support necessary to be elected. Without further delay our new Hall of Fame members are:

JOE DiMAGGIO
1936-40 Fort Lauderdale Breakers, 1941-45 Marshall Wolves, 1946-51 Evanston Sharks

A three-time Federal League Most Valuable Players and owner of two World Series rings, “Joltin’ Joe” was the cornerstone of a franchise that moved twice during his 13 year career….Owner of a .310 career batting average, he ranks in the ACBL top 20 of all-time in numerous offensive categories…Launched 309 career HRs, and 12 more in post-season play…Led the Federal League w/ a .370 average in his MVP year of 1941, which included 15 3Bs, 32 HRs and only 11 strikeouts in more than 600 plate appearances….Hit .421 in the 1938 Ft. Lauderdale World Series victory in 1938 and launched 3 HRs as Evanston won the World Series title in 1946

BOB JOHNSON
1933-45 Pennsylvania Peanuts

All-time career leader in Games, At Bats, HRs, & RBIs for team where he played his entire 13 year ACBL career….Ranks 3rd all-time in the ACBL in RBIs with 1401 and 5th in HRs with 332….”Indian Bob” was the World Series MVP in 1940 as Pennsylvania won its first ACBL Championship, as he hit 4 HRs and drove in 8 runs….Drove in more than 100 runs in 9 of his first 10 seasons, finishing with 99 RBIs in 1940…Hit .315 and drew 111 walks in 1944, and drove in 171 runs in 1936…Went 6-7 with 9 RBIs in a single game in 1942.

Here are the voting totals. As you can see, two other players, Lou Boudreau and Bucky Walters, came up one vote shy of election, while Hal Trotsky also had significant support. Any player who received a vote this year will return to next year’s ballot.

Thanks again for making this such a fun endeavor, and as always, thanks to Tom for running such a great league with a great history.
